International Experience

Angela Rodgers spent 6 weeks in the Karagwe District of Tanzania, Africa. She stayed in a home on the Nyakahanga Hospital grounds with 11 other students in the Pitt in Tanzania program. She was given the opportunity to volunteer at the Child Health Clinic, where she worked beside the local doctors. She often explored other areas of the hospital as well. Angela learned about the different illnesses that African children contracted regularly. The most prevalent illnesses included Malaria, acute respiratory infection, and diarrheal disease. Many of the diseases could have been prevented; however, they become deadly when found in an environment with little resources. She saw how involved doctors were while they worked and how they truly cared about the well being of their patients. In Africa, doctors are forced to diagnose with little if any medical equipment. Angela was surprised and relieved to find out that pregnant women and children under 5 years old were treated free of charge. She remained an active participant in the culture by going to the local market, chapel, orphan visits, mobile clinic, and even dinner parties. She quickly learned how accepting local individuals were of newcomers and always felt welcome. Angela has made many new friends through her experience abroad and continues to remain in touch when possible. She is very thankful that she was given the opportunity to visit and learn about another culture.
