International Experience

Daymeia Wimberley spent her summer volunteering with the organization “A Broader View” in the busy and developing city of Kathmandu, Nepal. The mission of this non-governmental organization is providing and protecting the rights, welfare and health of underprivileged children of Nepal. Daymeia spent most of her time at Orchid Garden Nepal, a day care and school up to grade 2 in the Kalopul district of Kathmandu. While volunteering at the school, Daymeia worked specifically with the toddlers in the daycare helping them practice writing, using educational toys to help them practice their motor skills, and feeding them lunch. Besides working with the daycare, Daymeia also had opportunities to: teach art lessons to the two second grade classes, work with the teacher’s to show them new art projects for their classes, and help with the beginning stages of painting a mural on the school’s stage. While in Kathmandu, Daymeia lived with other volunteers in houses that were staffed by the local family of the program director. Throughout her stay in Kathmandu, Daymeia had the chance to visit other cities in Nepal during the weekends to learn about the different cultures and living conditions within the country. This experience has been a huge blessing and Daymeia returns to the U.S. eager to use her newfound skills and knowledge to pursue her goals.

Community Engagement Experience
CEE Title:
Women Obtaining Wellness

Our CEE Woman Obtaining Wellness was a community workshop specifically targeting Arcadia's college aged women to promote women's wellness. We combined our experiences about women's issues from Nepal, Japan, and Costa Rica to create an effective workshop for our community. Our workshop included a focus on physical, mental, and emotional well-being with experts participating such as an athletic trainer, counseling services counselor, and a martial arts instructor. Our first segment included a game of body health jeopardy including topics such as sexual health, breast cancer, and healthy living. After our trivia game we engaged in a 20 minute exercise routine which included exercises we could complete at home, without equipment, and exercises to help promote strength. Throughout this segment questions could be asked about form, technique, and how they help the body. Our next expert was a counselor at Arcadia's counseling services center and shared a presentation about self-esteem. The presentation consisted of a power point and movie clips that showed how the media doesn't support promoting women's self-esteem in a positive way. This segment was very interactive because of the many opportunities from watching the clips which let the audience share thoughts and opinions about the media and self-esteem. Our final activity was the self-defense seminar with a martial arts instructor. The attendees were offered a chance to learn how to fight off potential attackers in a safe environment. The instructor also taught the attendees facts about assaults against women that in turn they could use their newfound skills to help prevent.
