International Experience

Elizabeth Kenny worked in an environmental laboratory in Dublin, Ireland, for twelve weeks through the Experiential Learning International Abroad Program. In that time, she tested various water and ground samples for Chemical Oxygen Demand, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Dissolved Oxygen, Kjedahl Nitrogen, E. coli, Faecal coliforms, Salmonella, and Clostridium perfringens. In addition, she was able to execute three validation projects to help gain method accreditation for the laboratory. Elizabeth was also afforded the opportunity to travel to the lab’s branch in Limerick to observe techniques for detection of organic contaminants in water samples. Living with a married couple and their three children, she felt fully immersed in the Irish culture. The family was able to answer her never-ending questions about Irish history, food, music, healthcare, education, language, and sports, among many other things. In her three month stay, she was able to learn a great deal about the similarities and differences between Irish and American cultures. On the weekends, Elizabeth used her free time to travel to various places around Ireland and volunteer at a soup kitchen.

Community Engagement Experience
CEE Title:
Green & Global: Starting Local

The Green & Global: Starting Local CEE event was a fair devoted to promoting environmental consciousness and sustainability awareness. The event focused on five critical sustainability issues: creative reuse, energy, recycling, sustainable agriculture, and water conservation. By visiting booths at the sustainability fair, participants were able to learn in an interactive manner about these green issues and local solutions. With various activities, videos, games, and demonstrations, participants were educated about environmental issues, solutions, and alternatives. In highlighting local, sustainable businesses and organizations such as Free Ride, Slow Food Pittsburgh, Zero Fossil, Nine Mile Run, and many others, participants were able to see that this global issue of conservation and sustainability starts at the local level.
