International Experience

Jaimee Swift is a senior Communications major and aspiring journalist studying at Temple University in Philadelphia. After spending six weeks learning about the diverse and colorful culture of Bahia, Brazil, Swift’s perspective and outlook on life has truly changed for the better. As she spent time among Brazilian natives, Swift studied Afro-Brazilian culture, Brazilian Music and Sound and Portuguese. She also took samba classes and practiced the martial art form, capoeira. Believing that the only way to fully understand and know a culture is through the people, Swift made sure to constantly connect with various people of all walks of life and learn about their stories. She also took advantage of exploring the many museums, cinemas, music and art that Brazil had to offer. Jaimee plans on returning to Bahia again to explore, in more detail, the culture and beyond.

Community Engagement Experience
CEE Title:
The Global View: From a Female Perspective

For her CEE, Jaimee led The Global View: From a Female Perspective in collaboration with Mighty Writers, a non-profit organization which promotes the eradication of illiteracy in Philadelphia. In order to inspire young women in Philadelphia to expand their opportunities in a global manner, Jaimee invited keynote speakers to discuss their own personal experiences abroad as well address topics including but not limited to: the African Diaspora, human trafficking in Brazil, apartheid and race relations in South Africa, and the Slow Food Movement in Italy. The audience asked questions, ate cultural food, and engaged in conversation about studying abroad.
