Taeyana Williams spent her study abroad experience for five weeks in San Jose, Costa Rica studying Medical Spanish and Costa Rican Healthcare and Tropical Diseases at Veritas University. She learned how to interview a patient and take vitals using the native language. She also learned about the differences and similarities between the Costa Rican and American healthcare systems through class and various trips to hospitals. She had the opportunity to utilize her assessment skills from nursing school to take blood pressures and blood sugars of local students and faculty of the university she attended with her teacher who was also an alternative health doctor. She learned the common Costa Rican diseases and what approaches to take to treat them, such as dengue fever and snake bites. She was also able to visit and interact with a town of natives with her teacher, where she learned about different plants used for medicine and their healthcare methods. On the weekends she immersed herself into the Costa Rican culture by exploring the regions of Costa Rica by going to areas such as Tamarindo, Monteverde, Puerto Viejo, and Arenal where she was able to see a volcano. She grew to appreciate all that Costa Rica had to offer and plans to return in the near future to interact more with the people and the culture.
